Three curb-side electric vehicle charging stations set up in London

London’s city-owned power distributor is officially opening three new charging stations for electric vehicles in the city this week.

Though they have been operational for a few weeks, London Hydro will officially unveil the stations Friday.

The new infrastructure will bring to 36 the total number of charging stations in London, according to PlugShare, a website that tracks the location of the electric charging station across North America.

The three new stations are located on Dundas Street at Wellington Street, on Clarence Street north of Dufferin Avenue and Talbot Street across the Budweiser Gardens.

The installation of the stations had a price tag of $39,000 and was possible thanks to a collaboration between the City of London, Natural Resources Canada, London Hydro and Flo, an electric vehicle charging network, said Nancy Hutton, a spokesperson with London Hydro.

“This will be a great demonstration for us to learn how people use the stations,” she said. “And as electric vehicles become more popular, it gives us an idea of how we would have to enhance the infrastructure in order to accommodate those vehicles.”

Over the last month, the stations have been used by close to 50 people, Hutton said.

Contrary to most charging stations, which are usually installed in parking lots, the new ones are located on street curbs.

“This will add some convenience to customers either working, shopping or visiting the downtown area,” Hutton added.

Non-electric vehicles will be prohibited from using the spaces in front of the charging stations. The expectation is that owners – who have to pay $1.50 an hour to charge their cars plus regular parking costs – would move their vehicles from the spots once they’re charged, so that other users can take advantage of them, Hutton said.
