Tottenham star Maya Vio among leading London Asians on awards list

Tottenham star Maya Vio, actor James Krishna Floyd and mental health campaigner Poppy Jamanare among the influential people shortlisted for this year’s Asian Achievers Awards .

In its 18th year, the awards celebrate British Asian talent across the arts, community service, sports, uniformed services and business.

The 32-strong shortlist — including 20 Londoners — was announced today ahead of a ceremony onSeptember 14 at the Grosvenor House hotel.

Midfielder Vio, 21, is nominated for sports personality of the year, as is Anoushé Husain, 30, a paraclimber who is ranked second in the UK. Parag Patel, a four-time Commonwealth gold-winning shooter and ear, mouth and nose surgeon at Kingston Hospital, is also on the list.

Bafta-nominated Floyd, 31, who is in ITV’s Good Karma Hospital, is listed for achievement in arts, media and culture as is BBC News presenter Babita Sharma.

Mental Health First Aid England chief executive Jaman, is nominated for community service.

The woman of the year category features Sonali Naik, QC, who was one of only 32 women out of 119 barristers made silks this year.Alongside Naik is Heidy Rehman, a former stockbroker who launched London-based fashion label Rose & Willard with the aim of empowering women in the workforce.

Akshay Ruparelia, 19, who turned down Oxford University to launch online property company Doorsteps.co.uk — now valued at£12 million — is nominated for entrepreneurship.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu is another notable Londoner on the shortlist.
