Stratford Shopping Centre floods: Mall still closed 24 hours after water main burst

Stratford Shopping Centre in east London was closed for a second dayafter it was flooded by a burst water main.

Seventy firefighters were called yesterday morning to the centreto deal with flooding of up to eight inches of water.

And a staff member from the centre said this morning: “We have cleaners inside the centre and inside the units.

“I can’t say 100 per cent, but it will probably remain closed today.”

The centre said it was “working hard with authorities to ensure the centre will be back open as soon as possible”.

Ten fire crews spent nearly seven hours at the scene yesterday, following emergency calls just after 9.15am.

They had to use sandbags to stop other properties being flooded.

The centre, which also puts on a daily market, houses 50 shops.
