Pensioner stabbed in the stomach and punched in the face during robbery

A pensioner was stabbed in the stomach then punched in the face as two violent thugs stole his wallet.

The 72-year-old man was walking through a park when he was approached by two men - writes itv.com.

While his personal belongings were being stolen from him one of the suspects continued to push the knife in the elderly victim.

The suspects punched him in the face and stabbed him in the stomach before demanding his wallet.

They then made off from the scene at Peckham Rye Park, south London, at around 7.45pm last Friday with the victim's wallet, containing £80, a watch and a lottery ticket.

The injured man managed to make his way to a nearby house and beg for help and was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital for treatment.

Police say his condition is not life threatening.

One of the suspects is a dark skinned black man, 20 to 30 years old, 6ft tall, of medium build, with a goatee beard and "untidy" hair and of "scruffy" appearance. Both suspects were described as black men.

This was an unnecessarily violent attack on a defenceless man. There was absolutely no need whatsoever for this elderly gentlemen to have been brutally attacked for his belongings.

It is pure luck that we are not now investigating a murder and it is imperative that these suspects are identified and arrested without delay.

– DETECTIVE SERGEANT CHRIS ROGERS, SOUTHWARK CID
