Painting in the East End is also celebrated with East End Vernacular looking at how the east end was painted in the 20th century - writes towerhamlets.gov.uk.

The Writeidea festival, backed by the Arts Council, will include a breadth of authors talking and reading from their own work combining well-known names with emerging writers, all bringing their own local, national and international perspective on fiction and non-fiction writing.

The diverse programme has over 40 events and opens with music from the Urban Playground which is a brass band from local school Morpeth School, made up 7-13 year olds. This is followed by The Gentle Author and his latest illustrated talk on 20th century East End artists. The festival also has a number of creative workshops and film and music.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said:

“The writeidea festival has developed into a real landmark cultural moment in the year and it’s great to see it return for its ninth year. Tower Hamlets has always been a cultural borough with a diverse history, and this festival reflects that with something for everyone. Please back our culture bid at the council website”

Councillor Abdul Mukit, Cabinet Member for Culture and Youth added:

“We should encourage more people to appreciate the benefits of reading, writing and engaging in culture, and doing our best to make culture open and accessible to all.

“The audience will hopefully enjoy the stories they will hear, some of which will sound more real than others. And if some bring tears to their eyes, we hope the storytelling and comedy sessions will bring magic and laughter too. Writing and culture is what we do best as a borough. The Writeidea festival is a great initiative with something for everyone, and the array of exciting local history will make us all prouder of where we live.”

Tower Hamlets is bidding to become the ‘London Borough of Culture’ and is calling on residents, businesses and visitors to back the bid. To bid please visit https://thbackthebid.co.uk and sign the pledge.
