During Living Wage Week the Leader of Brent Council, Cllr Muhammed Butt hosted a coffee morning to discuss the London Living Wage (LLW), which has increased to £10.20. The event brought together employers from a range of sectors in the borough to network and share their experiences.

Speaking at the event Cllr Butt said: "I'm proud that Brent is not only an accredited Living Wage employer, but now a Living Wage Friendly Funder. I want everyone in Brent to have the same opportunity regardless of their background. We are in a position to help residents get paid a fair wage so that we all live in a decent resilient society. It is good for working people, good for society and it is good for employers, creating a positive and dedicated workforce." - writes brent.gov.uk.
Further to that, Cllr Butt informed that the LLW is taken into consideration when contracts come up for renewal.
LLW employer Paul Maslen from Alpeona, who provide facilities management services to Brent Council, explained that they implemented the LLW in 2017. He said: "Paying the LLW has made Alpeona an attractive employer. I've a happy and loyal team, morale is great and retention rates are good."
Robert Johnson from Citizens UK is a strong advocate for LLW and explained: "Many people in in-work poverty face unpalatable choices such as heating their homes or eating. One in three children are currently living in poverty in Brent whilst the borough has the fifth highest levels of private rent in the borough. As a result of advocating for the LLW, Citizens UK has now lifted 130,000 families out of in work poverty."
The real Living Wage is independently calculated each year, and is based on the cost of living. There are currently 26 independent accredited employers in Brent and a further six accredited chains totalling 32 accredited organisations in the borough
