Bexley’s scheme was entered into the environmental services category of the awards. This marks excellence in any aspect of councils’ work in environmental services, including sustainability, energy, recycling, refuse collection, and street cleaning. Entries are judged on the innovation of their submissions and the extent to which they have improved the environment in their area and/or the efficiency of service delivery - writes bexley.gov.uk.
London Green Points Bexley rewards residents for their recycling efforts with prizes, discounts at local businesses and donations for charity. Residents can earn Green Points by simply recycling their waste, reporting their recycling and taking part in online waste and recycling modules.
Cllr Peter Craske, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure said: “To be shortlisted for this prestigious award is a fantastic achievement! London Green Points Bexley is an excellent scheme that encourages waste reduction and recycling, as well as supporting independent local businesses and local charity projects. I’m so pleased to hear that the judges have commended the high quality of entries this year and wish our Waste and Recycling team all the best in the finals in March.”
The panel of judges have said that “the quality of entries this year was extremely high” and that “entrants demonstrated the sort of outstanding innovation required to ensure services can flourish in difficult times”.
The Council’s Waste and Recycling team, along with nearly 100 shortlisted organisations, will present why they should win to an expert judging panel made up of senior local government figures in January.
Winners will be presented with their awards on 21 March 2018.
LGC editor Nick Golding said: “To be shortlisted for an LGC Award shows a council service is among the country’s most innovative, and doing the most to support the needs of local residents as councils face continuing budget cuts. We should salute the council officers and councillors doing the most to ensure our vital public services thrive in the era of austerity.”
