Thread and Thrum, an exhibition of works by London natives Meghan Dauphinee and Jen Wilson

Two artists known for their use of colour are brought together for a new exhibition at a London Gallery.

London native Meghan Dauphinee — whose series of paintings of London convenience stores drew rave reviews — and fibre artist Jen Wilson bring their art together for Thread and Throm at Westland Gallery in Wortley Village.

Dauphinee’s “bold, textured” paintings are quite distinctive while her and Wilson’s portrait embroidery is equally bright and colourful, said Danielle Hoevenaars, the gallery’s associate director.

“Artistic inspiration can come from anywhere, and for Meghan it was cookie decorating that led to her characteristic style,” said Hoevenaars.

“Meghan pours, drizzles and drips her paint onto the canvas, creating the smooth, raised texture of icing. Lines, outlines and dots in bright colours create an eye-catching collection. Each of Meghan’s paintings shows a different local building or business. They serve as postcards for the artist: sentimental reminders of treasured places from her hometown. These places are not major tourist attractions but the places that leave their mark on the locals.”

Among the London locations featured in Dauphinee’s paintings are the Western Fair, Malibu Restaurant, Hi-Fi Diner, Frank and Gus Pizza and the Mustang Drive In.

“Jen Wilson also allows for spirited, free flowing lines and patterns to play out on her pieces,” said Hoevenaars.

“In Jen’s work the foundation of these designs are the faces of local and historical women. Jen begins with a photo transfer onto her fabric and then slowly and meditatively begins to embroider. Elements of her own life and experiences weave their way into the imagery but she focuses on allowing her patterns and imagery to become what they will.”

Wilson’s American Goddess series celebrates historic women, including Amelia Earhart, Angela Davis, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ella Fitzgerald, Frida Khalo, Georgia O’Keefe, Maya Angelou and Rosa Parks.

Dauphinee has also contributed five works in embroidery that “bring together nature and the faces from her life in unique, layered compositions.”

“Thread and Thrum is an exhibition with incredible energy,” said Hoevenaars. “Bold colour is just the start. The works vibrate with lines, dots and patterns and the neighbourhood scenes and local faces will have you talking, sharing, reminiscing and leaving with a smile.”
