Green light for development of Ageing Well Strategy

Bexley's Cabinet this week (10 October) gave the go ahead to the development of the borough’s first ageing well strategy. It will help demonstrate to residents what the Council is doing with partners and community groups to promote personal and community resilience, and self-care.

The decision means that the London Borough of Bexley’s Public Health team will begin to engage with the public and partners on developing the strategy - writes

Cllr Brad Smith, Bexley's Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services said: “There are more than 40,000 people aged 65 and over in Bexley, representing nearly 17% of the total population. This is estimated to increase to 19% by 2030. There is a clear need for a borough wide strategy that demonstrates what we’re doing with others to support residents to live and age well.

“We want to make sure it includes the types of information that residents, carers and families need so we’ll be asking residents, local groups and partners to help us in developing the strategy over the coming months.”

Residents and partner organisations will have their first opportunity to provide their suggestions for the strategy at the Council’s first ever Ageing Well event this Saturday (14 October).

The free event at the Civic Offices between 11am and 4pm will showcase the wide range of support, opportunities and activities available for older people, their families and carers in the borough.

Over 30 health and wellbeing organisations will be available to talk to, including Age UK Bexley, Mind in Bexley, Contact the Elderly UK, Alzheimer's Society, Crossroads Care South East London and many more.

There will also be free refreshments and entertainment on the day, and free on-site parking.
